Malkit Singh Tehang is a long standing leader of the Sikh community in Sandwell. He is the president of the first and largest Gurdwara (Sikh Temple) in the UK - Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick. ==Background== Born in 1954 in the village Tehang, near Phillaur, Punjab, Malkit migrated from Punjab to the United Kingdom in the 1970s. As with many Sikhs at the time Malkit became an Amritdhari (Baptised) Sikh in 1984 after the Operation Bluestar attack on the Golden Temple. Since 1984 he has worked for the Sikh community. He was selected onto the committee in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. Malkit first became the president of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick in 1999 in which he completed the main building situated at 128-130 High Street Smethwick.
